ACQUAINTED WITH THE NIGHT<\/strong><\/em>

I have been one acquainted with the night.
I have walked out in rain\u2014and back in rain.
I have outwalked the furthest city light.


I have looked down the saddest city lane.
I have passed by the watchman on his beat
And dropped my eyes, unwilling to explain.


I have stood still and stopped the sound of feet
When far away an interrupted cry
Came over houses from another street.


But not to call me back or say good-bye;
And further still at an unearthly height
One luminary clock against the sky


Proclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.
I have been one acquainted with the night.

BEKEND ZIJN MET DE NACHT<\/strong>

Ik ben bekend met nacht en duisternis.
‘k Ben regen \u00edn, en er doorheen gegaan.
‘k Weet vanaf waar de stad elk baken mist.


Zo zag ‘k de meest ellendig zaken aan,
en zag mij een bewaker, in zo’n nacht,
zou ‘k niets verklaren, maar mijn blik neerslaan.


Soms stond ik stil, stopte mijn tred, want zacht
klonk ergens uit een straat, een huis, een kreet
die stokte in een halve jammerklacht,


want niet ter afscheid, noch die welkom heet;
iets verder n\u00f3g, onwerelds hoog, gewis
stelde \u00e9\u00e9n klok, die lichtend lucht doorsneed:


de tijd is fout noch goed, geschieden is.
Ik ben bekend met nacht en duisternis.
