Het is zo tegen achten en deze avond is de herdenkingsavond. Op de Dam, op de Waalsdorpervlakte en op tal van plaatsen waar aan de gruweljaren wordt teruggedacht en terecht.<br>De merel houdt op met zingen en in de verte klinkt een ijle trompet. Dan is het volkomen stil.<br>Alleen het ruisen van bladeren dat de stilte omlijst.\u00a0<br>Slechts enkele seconden, want plotseling verheft zich achter de schutting een groot en dreigend blaffen. Dat is een groot exemplaar hond, denk ik nog en dan een zware mannenstem die gebiedt:<br>\u201d Koest, Nero ! Kappen nou !! Af !!\u201d\u00a0<br><br>Het blaffen wordt wat dunner en komt tenslotte tot een zacht, smartelijk gejammer.<br>Ach, was er zo&#8217;n tachtig jaar geleden ook maar iemand geweest die op\u00a0 luide toon geroepen had:<br>\u201c Kappen nou, Nero, af !! \u201c<br>Maar helaas heeft het niet zo mogen zijn.<br><br><br><em>Mirjam
